Charcoal has the ability to adsorb contaminants, removing them from the water as the water flows past the charcoal (aDsorb means to stick to a surface in a thin layer as opposed to soaking in like aBsorb). This process also creates a very large surface area. 1 gram of activated carbon can easily adsorb moisture levels the size of 8 tennis courts. Scottish physicist James Dewar extensively studied the gas absorption capacity of activated carbon. Our experimental results showed that the size of activated carbon had little effect on the adsorption of little molecular substance, but it had significant effect on the adsorption of middle molecular substance. Activated carbon, also called activated charcoal or activated coal is a form of carbon that has been processed to make it extremely porous and thus to have a very large surface area available for adsorption or chemical reactions. It was not until the last few decades when the third form, Activated Carbon Fibre / Fabric (ACF), was successively developed. Adsorption of gold complexes (especially ion disianoaurat) on activated carbon is the basis of modern techniques for gold extraction process. €Activated carbon has been an excellent tool in environmental treatment for decades for its low cost and adaptability into different applications. The use of activated carbon in filtering mechanisms is an effective way of removing chlorine (and its by-products) as well as volatile organic compounds such as atrazine, benzene, radon, PCBs and toluene, along with many others. In fact, one teaspoon of activated charcoal has a total surface area as big as a football field! Activated carbon is able to remove chloramines, through a process called adsorption; There is no absorption. This opens up the charcoal and exposes more of its surfaces, so it can adsorb much more. NOM also interferes with water treatment processes; it causes membrane fouling and competes with other pollutants for activated carbon adsorption sites. Activated charcoal is specially processed to make it extremely porous. Laboratory studies on the adsorption of bacteria onto soils and activated carbon were undertaken to evaluate the role of the process in removal of bacteria from groundwater. The paper using novel carbon-based material activated carbon fiber as adsorbent develop the research on organic waste gases' adsorption and recycle. It is even much more effective that silica gel! Activated carbon is a natural desiccant that has excellent adsorption capabilities.
